The Essential ACAO Development Series Session 3: Leading from the ACAO Position

The job of an assistant chief administrative officer (ACAO) is complex, requiring the right mix of tactical and leadership skills. This dynamic position involves wearing many hats and is often considered the step before becoming a CAO.  ICMA’s ACAO Committee introduces a collection of online seminars to provide pro tips for this role – no matter what your career stage. 

Session 3, Leading from the ACAO Position, is designed for seasoned ACAOs seeking to learn, refine and improve skill sets to be a highly effective leader in this role. You will receive advice from the field on how to navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with leading as second in command. Topics will include:

• Career Advancement: Encouragement for ACAOs to actively pursue new projects or initiatives that challenge them and keep them engaged.
• Understanding Responsibilities: Helping ACAOs understand the CAO's duties and are prepared to assume them during public meetings, emergencies or other situations where the CAO is not available. 
• Building Relationships: Discussing methods for building trust and maintaining team morale during periods of organizational change.
